MORGAN'S MOMENT
“Keep it short, dad…
        there's an eclipse tonight.”
Yes…
I knew there would be an eclipse
about in the middle of my talk.
My words about the mystical
       would be illustrated
from the dark moon in the sky.
We needed an Oregon miracle
       to even see the moon
       on a winter's night.
My daughters and grandchildren
       and others gathered there
hoped for the miracle of my brevity.
Both miracles occurred…
       I was surprisingly brief
and clouds parted for the moon.
And our group went out to gaze
as humans have done for ages
       at a mysteriously darkened moon.
Awesome to think of the earth
       perfectly positioned
to cast it's shadow on the moon.
Awesome as well to think of clouds
       not blocking our view
and me not preventing the viewing.
We can be thankful that most of the time
our earth does not block the sun
from shining it's light on the moon.
Blessed be all creatures and things
that get out of the way
to let the light shine through.

JANE GOODALL
Goodall is the lady who spent all those years studying chimpanzees. She has been in Africa for most of her adult life. Like most who pay attention to the natural world she is dismayed by the destruction of the forests, erosion of the soil and loss of habitat for fish and animals and other forms of life.
She is a spiritual lady, believing that in some way, humans are connected to the source of life. She talks about  the unique importance of our right brain, the center of feelings of awe, wonder and mystery. She says:
“How sad it would be, I thought, if we humans ultimately were to lose all sense of mystery, all sense of
awe. If our left brains were utterly to dominate the right so that logic and reason triumphed over intuition
and alienated us absolutely from our innermost being, from our hearts, our souls.”
